Other proposed causal or contributing factors to the extinction have included the Deccan Traps and other volcanic eruptions, [ 16 ] [ 17 ] climate change , and sea level change. Yet, in January 2020, scientists reported that climate-modeling of the mass extinction event favored the asteroid impact and not volcanism . [ 18 ] [ 19 ] [ 20 ]
The Cretaceous–Paleogene ( K–Pg ) extinction event , [ a ] formerly known as the Cretaceous-Tertiary ( K–T ) extinction event , [ b ] was a major mass extinction of three-quarters of the plant and animal species on Earth [ 2 ] [ 3 ] which occurred approximately 66 million years ago. The event caused the extinction of all of the non-avian dinosaurs and most other tetrapods weighing more than 25 kg (55 lb), with the exception of some ectothermic species such as sea turtles and crocodilians . [ 4 ] It marked the end of the Cretaceous period, and with it the Mesozoic era, while heralding the beginning of the current geological era, the Cenozoic Era . In the geologic record , the K–Pg event is marked by a thin layer of sediment called the K–Pg boundary or K–T boundary , which can be found throughout the world in marine and terrestrial rocks. The boundary clay shows unusually high levels of the metal iridium , [ 5 ] [ 6 ] [ 7 ] which is more common in asteroids than in the Earth's crust . [ 8 ]

The Length-weight relationships (LWRs) were estimated for 29 commercially vital demersal reef fish species caught in the experimental longline fisheries from the Gulf of Mannar (GoM), India during December, 2019 to September, 2021. For this purpose, the experimental longline gear was operated between 20 and 50 m depths during from 3 to 5 hours. By using the logarithmic transformed data, linear regression analysis was performed to calculate a and b values for 29 fish species distributed under 5 families and 6 genera to establish LWRs. The estimated minimum and maximum allometric coefficient (b), coefficient of determination (r 2 ) and Fulton’ condition factor (K) were 2.6023 and 3.8743, 0.8493 and 0.9019, 1.3357 and 2.5846, respectively. This study reports a new maximum size for Lutjanus rivulatus (83 cm) for the whole world for the first time. In addition, the current study brings out facts on LWR of fish species like Lethrinus ornatus , Lethrinus harak , Cephalopholis urodeta , Epinephelus polyphekadion and Epinephelus coeruleopunctatus for the first time in Indian waters in general and GoM in particular.
